As they rebuilt Jerusalem’s wall, God’s people faced fierce opposition from surrounding enemies. In response, the people prayed, and Nehemiah encouraged them not to be afraid, reminding them that it was God fighting for them. The workers began to strategically defend themselves while continuing their work. “Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other.” God’s people refused to give in to the threats of their enemies and pressed on to complete the work the Lord had given them. When we face resistance, criticism, or discouragement in serving the Lord, may we follow their example—praying faithfully, refusing to give in to fear, trusting God, and persevering until the work He has entrusted to us is complete.
