Upon inquiring about the Jewish remnant in Jerusalem, Nehemiah discovers the city’s walls lie in ruins. Deeply distressed, he mourned, fasted, and prayed before the Lord. Nehemiah prays, “LORD, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel.” Nehemiah’s prayer begins by acknowledging God’s greatness. He appeals to God’s covenant love, confesses the sins of the people, recalls God’s promise to restore those who return to Him, and asks for favor. Nehemiah’s example reminds us to bring our burdens before God in humility, confession, and faith, trusting that God keeps His promises.
