Ezra was deeply grieved by the people’s disobedience in marrying foreign women. Scripture says, “While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites—men, women, and children—gathered around him. They too wept bitterly.” God’s law was not rooted in racial distinction, but in protecting His people from influences that would draw them away from faithful worship. As the chapter continues, the people acknowledge their sin, repent, and return to living under God’s covenant. May we likewise respond to God’s conviction with sincere repentance and a wholehearted desire to walk in obedience.
