ECCLESIASTES 1 - Searching for Meaning

Have you ever reached the end of a busy day and wondered what it all accomplished? Ecclesiastes begins with a searching question about what we gain from all our labor under the sun (v. 3). The writer observes how the rhythms of life keep repeating, while generations come and go.

The words “meaningless” or “vanity” describe something fleeting, like a breath that cannot be held. The writer is not dismissing the value of life, but exposing the limits of trying to find ultimate meaning in what is temporary.

Even knowledge and achievement cannot answer every question of the human heart (v. 18). We can spend our lives pursuing things that promise meaning, only to discover that they cannot satisfy our deepest longings. Ecclesiastes invites us to consider an important question: What are we expecting this life to give us that it cannot ultimately provide?

Where are you searching for meaning or satisfaction in something that cannot last? Bring that desire before the Lord in prayer today.
