Psalm 88 is one of the darkest prayers in Scripture, as the writer cries out to God from a place of overwhelming suffering, loneliness, and despair. Unlike many other psalms of lament, the circumstances do not improve and the psalm ends without a clear resolution. Yet throughout his darkness, the psalmist continues directing his cries toward God.
Faith does not always mean that we immediately see our circumstances change; sometimes faith simply means continuing to pray when everything still feels dark. Psalm 88 reminds us that God welcomes our honest prayers even when we do not have a hopeful ending yet.
