"When King David was old… his son, Adonijah, exalted himself, saying, 'I will be king'…. His father had never crossed him at any time by asking, 'Why have you done so?'” v1-6. It would be too easy to castigate David as a father, to seek to understand why he neglected his own family, and analyze the motives and factors that perhaps encouraged Adonijah to do what he did. But the story is intended, not to denigrate David, but to warn us of the self-justification of arrogance and the value of proper discipline that makes us face our own motives.
If Christ is to be our example, we must embrace a humility that finds expression in justice and kindness. Only then are we truly like our King.
