“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (v41). Jesus taught about the kingdom of God to a very religious society that had, in many ways, domesticated the faith of Abraham and Moses by putting it under human control. Jesus’ stories cut through cultural misunderstandings, insisting that God’s kingdom requires real participation (v24), grows in unexpected ways and places (v27) and might look insignificant in the world’s eyes (v31).

“Peace, be still!” (vv39). The Messiah arrived quietly, without pomp or flash, the opposite of society’s expectations of a king. When we turn away from the world’s false promises and shallow human religion, we can receive his word that brings true peace.
