“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (v46). Jesus insisted that calling him “Lord” should mean a whole-life revolution. He rejected the status quo that affirmed caring only for one’s own family and status (v24-26) and left peoples’ hearts unchanged. “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them” (v32). Instead, Jesus announced that people were “blessed” who, in their weakness, threw themselves on God’s mercy and extended that mercy to others (v20-22, v35-38).

“Can a blind man lead a blind man?” (v39). Looking to our own culture for what is “good” leaves us blind. Following Jesus means accepting His definition of God’s good kingdom.
