“When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too” (v21). Jesus’ baptism demonstrated two important aspects of his identity. First, the Spirit descended, and the Father spoke from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love” (v22). Jesus was the divine Son come in the flesh. Yet he was Mary’s child, raised by Joseph; he was a “son of Adam” who shared the troubles of his brothers and sisters (v38).
“With you I am well-pleased” (v22). Jesus was baptized like us and walked our human path all the way to the cross, yet without sin. United with him by faith, we get to share his righteousness, his resurrection, and his Father’s loving approval.
