Amaziah and Uzziah, kings of Judah, faithfully served the Lord for a season, yet both ultimately drifted into unfaithfulness. In contrast to these kings, “Jotham grew powerful because he walked steadfastly before the LORD his God.” Then, Ahaz, the king of Israel, rejected the Lord in every way: “He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and sacrificed his children in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.” These kings reveal the danger of spiritual drift, the blessings of steadfast devotion, and the destruction caused by intentional sinfulness. God is not simply concerned with how we begin, but with our wholehearted devotion throughout a lifetime.
