Not only is arrogance pernicious, it is persistent. Solomon had just been appointed king when Adonijah went to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, and asked that Abishag, the beautiful former nurse of David, be given to Adonijah as his wife. He convinced Bathsheba that his motives were pure. He knew, however, symbolism would represent to the people that he was the actual king.
Proverbs 16:18, probably written by Solomon, observed that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. The ministry of Jesus opened with blessings: the poor in spirit possess the kingdom of heaven; the meek will inherit the earth, Matt. 5:1-5. We can base our lives on that truth.
