Pilate’s goal was crowd control (15). The chief priests “out of envy” (10) sought the death penalty, stirring up the crowds (11) against Jesus. The soldiers did their job of physical punishment and humiliation (19-20). Even the criminals crucified beside him “reviled him” (32). But at his death, “the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom” (38).
On the surface this was a hateful, cruel, unjust day. Evil seemed to be winning. But the evil aligned against Jesus did not deter him from his task. His death covered our sins and opened the curtain between humanity and a Holy God. Despite our rebellion, Jesus made a way for us to enter the Father’s presence.
