We do not study Gideon, or any other person in scripture, to learn what Gideon was like. We study to find what God is like; He never changes. God’s work in Gideon was not to make him a man of war but a man of trust and obedience. Chapter 7:1-8 opens with the 99% reduction of Gideon’s army, from 32,000 to 300, not from poor leadership but from obedience. God took the 1% and defeated an army, according to commentators, of probably more than 150,000. Obedience does not weaken; it increases our strength.
God’s goal in us is the same – to make us people of obedience. When we are, we do not need to fear.
