“Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore….. they were eating and drinking and rejoicing” v1. Solomon assumed the kingdom following David’s success as a man of war. God had promised him wisdom beyond any man (3:12) and incomparable wealth (3:13). It was a time of unparalleled abundance. “Judah and Israel lived in safety, every man under his vine and fig tree from Dan to Beersheba” 4:25. God enjoyed fulfilling His Word.
Extravagance is not necessarily evil, but tends to plant seeds of its own demise. One can begin to think there are no “guardrails” if one has enough wealth and power. They forget that it is God “who gives the power to make wealth", Deut. 8:18. Neither poverty nor wealth are proof of God’s faithfulness or ours.
