The people of Israel “signed” this covenant with God by setting up “an altar of stones” to the Lord (27:5). Through the peace offering, the Israelites celebrated their fellowship with God – which was his intention for humans (27:7). Moses described the covenant between Israel and God in a stark contrast of blessings and curses. If God’s people faithfully obeyed (28:1), then blessings would “overtake them” (28:2), but if not, they would “grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways” (28:29).
The “wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is life” (Romans 6:23). Jesus makes clear that to follow him is the path to life – God’s intention for humanity (Matthew 7:13). He wants to bless and celebrate life with us.
