After a three-year drought, Ahab further hardened his heart. Elijah called for an assembly of the false prophets – 850 in total. Elijah instructed the prophets to prepare an ox for a sacrifice, put it on wood, but no fire. As they prayed to Baal, Elijah ridiculed them. At noon, Elijah took another ox prepared for sacrifice, built an altar with stones, called on God, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the ox! Elijah had the prophets killed and announced the end of the drought.
What should have brought national revival instead produced a manhunt for Elijah with a price on his head. When one’s heart is set to do evil, grace is misunderstood. It is often seen as opportunity for more sin.
