This Psalm leads us to consider three lessons learned by David, the king. The first sets the tone: “Oh God, You have rejected us; … Heal the breaches of the earth for it totters” vs 1-3. God had acted against evil, and David knew the land was being punished. (It almost sounds contemporary.) The second lesson is an insight into God’s sovereignty. God speaks of his use of nations such as Shechem, Succoth, Gilead, Manasseh, etc. Moab, Philistia and Judah are in the same list. He still uses nations, but not always as they desire. The last lesson is one of grace. “Through God we shall do valiantly, and it is He who will tread down our adversaries” v12. That is the point at which we find peace.
