At the death of Solomon, the nation divided because of Rehoboam’s foolish arrogance. Jeroboam became king over the dissidents. Jeroboam was wicked, and his ascendancy to power presaged the difficult years that were ahead. So God sent a prophet to announce that a king was coming in the future named Josiah who would restore Israel. The prophecy of one coming meant Israel would survive the difficult years (2 Kings 22,23); there would be a tomorrow. The prophecy demonstrated that God knew and would guide the future.
God tells his followers as much of the future as we need to know and expects us to follow Him faithfully. A greater than Josiah is coming; our role is to be faithful.
