Male circumcision, the 2000-year-old sign of faith in the covenant of Abraham, became an issue in the early church. Jewish Christians sincerely believed the Gentiles could be saved, but only if they were circumcised as had been all converts to Judaism, 15:1-5. Peter stood and declared the clear position of salvation by grace through faith, vs 6-11. In verse 12, Paul and Barnabas shared experiential, “anecdotal” evidence of the same. And finally, James, the moderator, stood and gave the summation, “it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…” v28.
Unity is important but may demand examination of issues. As long as it is resolved with “what seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us,” we are on good ground.
