“Shishak, king of Egypt….took all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.” King Jeroboam, to cover the loss, “made shields of bronze in their place.” Neither gold nor bronze were ideal for fighting; both were ceremonial. Gold represented the great wealth of Solomon. Bronze was used to carry on the illusion of wealth.
The loss of the gold standard of spiritual integrity can sometimes be hidden by “shields of bronze.” On the surface one seems to talk and act the same way, but great spiritual value has been lost. The same “ceremony” no longer has the same meaning. Bronze is no substitute for gold.
