The nobility of David’s spirit was seen when God told him he was not to build the temple; that was to be assigned to his son, Solomon. Without hesitation he laid aside his plans and turned his focus and energy “with great pains,” v14, to making preparation for the temple he would never see. David’s two major failures in life, adultery with Bathsheba and “counting the people”, are not the issues that led to his not building the temple. They were forgiven. He did not build because God used him in a different way, 22:8.

Our lives are crafted by God. We “fit” where he places us. We may “succeed” in other endeavors, but we only please Him when we are obedient.
