1 Chronicles 20 is the record of giants that were destroyed by relatives and compatriots of David. His victory over Goliath had demonstrated that giants were not invincible. 1 Chronicles 21:1 begins “Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel.”  We are not told of Satan’s method, but he succeeded. Against the advice of Joab, he insisted. The numbers were impressive, v5, but “God was displeased with this thing so he struck Israel,” v7. This exercise in hubris ultimately cost the lives of 70,000 men, v14!!

Possibly this was in Solomon’s mind when he wrote, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall,” Proverbs 16:18. We would do well to remember David’s lesson that success has its own dangers.
