“Then the women said to Naomi, 'Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer ...!'” (v14). The same women who had seen Naomi return to Bethlehem without sons and husband (1:19) now witnessed what the Lord had done for her. Naomi had thought she was “empty” (1:21), but she had Ruth, who “loves you” and is better than “seven sons” (4:15), and now a grandson. Behind Ruth’s faithful love and Boaz’s kindness was “the Lord,” who was at work among his people.
“He shall be to you a restorer of life and nourisher of your old age” (v15). Obed’s birth demonstrated God’s faithfulness to restore what has been lost and signaled the coming Messiah, David’s descendent, Redeemer of the whole world.
