“And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?’ But they remained silent” (v3-4). The Pharisees were a very moral, religious group that highly valued keeping the Law. However, their ideas about ‘God’s kingdom’ did not match what Jesus said and did (v15). They were repulsed by Jesus’ teaching and healings. In the parable of the banquet, they were invited but refused to go in, while the “poor and crippled and blind and lame” took their places (v21).
“A man once gave a great banquet and invited many” (v16). Jesus is the One who defines God’s kingdom, not us. What he said and did demonstrated God’s heart and created a path for us to follow.
